Spizella is a word with Latin and Greek origin and it means ‘sparrow’. Spizella is the story of a father and his daughter with troubled family relationships, which have become even more troubled after the death of the mother. The father keeps forcing his daughter to keep the mourning attitude alive and ongoing within the house and he tries to keep his communication with her very limited. This gloomy house is no different than a cage for this timid girl. The strong revival of her childhood memories and dreams by means of a souvenir suitcase left from her mother can bring the girl a glimpse of happiness.

A story begun and never finished.
A story caused by the most ferocious instincts of the human being and that is repeated every day.
It is terrible but 85% of cases of pedophilia occur in the family.
Coming out of pain and guilt is impossible for an abused child. Even the years cure the wounds.
And what happens in the abused child’s brain? And above all how does that child become an adult? Sometimes the desire to do justice alone for those adult children is the only way to go.
For those who have suffered the worst wrongs “there is no forgiveness and there is no revenge” there is only the desperate need to go further.

Short Film: GAMES WE PLAY, 9min., Denmark, Drama

We follow Johan, an 11-years old boy through a sunny day with his two friends, Felix and Clara. The three kids find a dead bird on the street. Johan, our main character, has the idea for a funeral. They go to a forest near by to search for other dead animals and find a dead mouse. They end up arranging a funeral for the dead animals. The funeral happens in a playful manner. Johan and Felix have a competitive friendship. They both want to impress Clara and prove themselves. Later, the kids walk out of the forest to a field. Before that the tension between Johan and Felix has grown. At a field they pass by, stands an old bathtub full of water. Felix suddenly puts his head under water to see how long he can hold his breath. After that he brags about the time he could hold his breath. Feeling the pressure of Felix and Clara’s attention, Johan decides to go under water as well. Johan gives it a second try. This time Felix pushes him down. He is trying to humiliate him and doesn’t let go. A fight develops while Johan is under water. Clara interrupts the situation, but Johan doesn’t raise his head out of the water. Later, Clara and Felix walk alone through the forest. Further away from them walks Johan. He takes a different path than the others. He wanders back to the animal’s graves from before. Johan destroys them and walks back into the forest. The film deals with the discovery of self-mortality, exploring death through kids’ eyes and playful interpretation of adult rituals.

MOVIE POSTERBENDED BONDS, 6min, Belgium, Drama
Directed by Julie Janssens

Sarah and Jane, two sisters, haven’t spoken to each other for years. The death of their mother forces them to come together to make the arrangements for their legacy. Their painful memories and resentments crawl back to the surface.

Director Statement

The challenge of the movie was to communicate the paradox and complexity of siblings relationships through dialogs, silences and gazes. From an outside perspective, these tensions may seem ridiculously intense and dramatic. Sarah and Jeanne have a hard time understanding each other. They are trying to get away from some patterns transmitted by generational legacy. They claim who they are but they struggle to move through the perception of the family they grew up with.

What particularly concerns me is the unconditional love we share with our siblings. It’s the kind of relationship that allows low blows and induces a duty to reconcile. This relationship is undeniable because it is “the same flesh, the same blood”.

Also reconciliations are special in this love/hate relationship. From what I have observed in my own family, seldom are there proper apologies or truthful excuses. Most of the time, with my sister, we renew contact without obtaining a conflict resolution. Time passes, we forget about it until the next hint that will rekindle the flame. Between siblings we know exactly what to say to each other to piss or hurt each other. These recurrent conflicts become individual scars and/or common ones.

I also wanted to recreate this ambivalence in the title “Bended bonds”:
– ‘bended’ refers to the bended, twisted relationship they developed,
– ‘bonds’ refers to the brotherhood and the fact that they were tied to some things before they met again … but finally freed themselves.

The combination of the two terms expresses the paradox of their relationship. One expression cancels and/or complements the other … Moreover, this ambiguity leaves an open end for the viewer.

This short film was shot from start to finish in 72 hours as part of the Kino Kabaret at the “Off-Courts” Trouville 2016 festival.

This story is a realistic private session with the necessary subtilety to address the complexity of a sister’s relationship with accuracy and sensitivity.
